Slammed by Colleen Hoover

Slammed - Colleen Hoover

Goodreads Synopsis:

Following the unexpected death of her father, 18-year-old Layken is forced to be the rock for both her mother and younger brother. Outwardly, she appears resilient and tenacious, but inwardly, she's losing hope.

Enter Will Cooper: The attractive, 21-year-old new neighbor with an intriguing passion for slam poetry and a unique sense of humor. Within days of their introduction, Will and Layken form an intense emotional connection, leaving Layken with a renewed sense of hope.

Not long after an intense, heart-stopping first date, they are slammed to the core when a shocking revelation forces their new relationship to a sudden halt. Daily interactions become impossibly painful as they struggle to find a balance between the feelings that pull them together, and the secret that keeps them apart.

Review:

This was my first Colleen Hoover book and I am so happy I have finally read one of her books!

I didn't know how I would feel about this story as immediately when the main characters met they were in love, surprise surprise! I'm glad I continued with the story though as once different obstacles and dramas were thrown into the mix I got over the insta love. I didn't know this was about a teacher/student relationship going into it, although it's not the typical storyline you would expect.

One issue I had was that Colleen seemed to go out of her way to make this book as tragic as possible. First we learned that Will's parents died suddenly and he was left to look after his little brother but then Layken's mom got sick and from there we knew how it was going to end. The story was quite predictable with the only surprising aspect being that he was her teacher.

I loved the writing style and the slam poetry aspect which I had never read about before. It was so easy to read and I flew through it! I did give it 3 and a half stars as although I liked it I was expecting more going into it. I'd heard so much hype about Colleens books so my rating had more to do with my expectation than anything else. Saying that I am really excited to read more of her books.
